Robert Francis Gilwell Esq. had inexplicably disappeared
on Christmas Eve 1903 somewhere between his Cheshire home and a place he referred to as his ’secret retreat’. Now that the requisite seven years had elapsed and Mr Gilwell had officially become the late Robert Gilwell, it had fallen to me as his solicitor to put his estate in order.
The further I delved into the life of Mr Gilwell, an elderly bachelor with no immediate family, the more intrigued I became with the man. Wealthy, recluse, belligerent without close friend or confidant, why would he need a secret retreat? And the retreat had indeed remained secret until I discovered the title deeds of a house on Ynys Môn, a somewhat remote island off the coast of North Wales. Intrigued, I decided to motor down to see for myself. How often does one wish for hindsight? I had acted on a whim and, as an experienced solicitor, I should have been more circumspect.............
